THE BEHAVIOR GENE
A Standard Temperament Test That Produces Extraordinary Results
ThoroughGen has identified a specific mutation in a gene that can greatly affect the behavior of horses. One variant of this gene is found in
horses that are generally stoic and vigilant, while the other version of this gene is found in horses that are more curious and reactionary.
We recently followed several thoroughbreds from racing to retirement to establish if the polymorphism in this gene had any effect on their
post-racing career. The horses that had two copies of the "stoic" allele took very well to retraining and the majority became wonderful
hunter/jumper or dressage horses, while the horses that had two copies of the "curious" allele had a much harder time with retraining and had
to be placed with more experienced horsemen and women. Subsequent testing suggested that this method of behavioral assessment followed the same
pattern in American Saddlebreds and Friesians. This test may eventually be useful as a pre-screening for horse purchase or for selecting breeding pairs
that will yield the best temperament.
Cost per horse is $100, with discounts available on multiple orders.
MITOCHONDRIAL DNA TESTING FOR GENEALOGY
ThoroughGen Can Tell You If Your Horse Comes From Famous Lineage... And Then You Can Tell Everyone Else
Mitochondria are DNA-containing organelles found in all animal cells that are passed almost exclusively from mother to offspring.
Therefore, by sequencing the mitochondrial genome from any animal, we can establish the maternal lineage of that organism.
This is the same technology that is used by many companies to establish ancestry in humans, and we have the capability of performing this test on all
breeds of horses. Imagine finding out that your Hanoverian is from a lineage that can be traced back to the Iberian Peninsula thousands of ago!
From this test, you will receive the information on your horses' maternal lineage plus a list of famous horses that share that same lineage... and
that surely will make you the envy of all of your riding friends!
Cost per horse is $125, with discounts available on multiple orders.
